Safety During Water Damage

Water damage in homes can be caused from a variety of things including storm weather, floods, water leaks from plumbing, cracks or seepage from foundations, roofs caving in due to snow or ice buildup, or from fire extinguishing.

Water damage is something you never want to fool around with if it happens to you. That’s why you hear landlords always tell tenant to call immediately if there is a plumbing leak or other water flooding issue.

Professionals need to step in right away so you and your loved ones can stay safe. In flooding situations that involve natural disasters, call your local emergency services and leave the home and shut off the main power to the house as soon as you see a problem. With water damage from water lines to the home, shut off the water valve to the area or at the water main in your front yard.

If wastewater backups cause flooding in your home and you can’t unplug the clog, you’ll want to be sure to not use the commode or drain having problems until the line is cleared. Keep yourself, pets, and family members out of the wastewater because it is contaminated with waste matter.

Sometimes fresh water can flood your home if something like a pipe breaks when freezing, an appliance or plumbing connection springs a leak, or a pipe rusts and fails from scale buildup. This isn’t serious unless the water reaches an area of the home with electrical wiring.

When your Chicagoland home or business is damaged, you suffer emotionally as well, and it’s no wonder because your property is more than a building. It’s our home or our livelihood where we spend our days and nights forming memories of our relationships with other people. We are emotionally invested and that’s all there is to it. Also, suffering a huge water damage issue causes so much stress it can make even a grown man cry.

In our area of the country, it’s not uncommon for the snow and ice on rooftops to build up so high that the sheer weight of it causes roofs to cave in. This is a seriously dangerous situation that can be avoided but often isn’t either because the property owner didn’t know or couldn’t afford the snow and ice removal. Also, in snow storms coming from the arctic, it can fall so fast there isn’t time to get the snow removed before it is too late for the roof.
